Compared with the first trimester, the second trimester of your pregnancy will have more frequent changes. In fact, you should expect to experience something new every week.
Second Trimester – Week 13
Week 13 of your pregnancy marks the start of the second trimester. For the first time, your doctor can detect a small bump of your uterus in the lower part of your abdomen. This is because your baby would have a weight of about 3/4 ounce and measure between 2 1/2 – 3 inches (from head to bottom).
Second Trimester – Week 14
At this time the increasing growth of your baby and expansion of your uterus can cause abdominal aches. During this week, your baby’s weight would have increased to nearly 1 ounce.
Second Trimester – Week 15
During this week, your uterus increases in size and tends to push down on your diaphragm. This can cause you to feel short of breath.
Second Trimester – Week 16
By week 16, you would notice an increase in your body weight. This weight gain is simply because of the increased amniotic fluid and blood volume, swelling breasts, growing uterus and placenta. You may even feel your baby moving.
Second Trimester – Week 17
At this time your uterus would have grown to just 2 inches below your belly button. By now your baby would have a weight of 5 ounces (5 times the weight at week 14).
Second Trimester – Week 18
Your uterus would be about the size of a cantaloupe. Also your baby would be aware of noises outside the womb.
Second Trimester – Week 19
Your total weight gain would be between 8 to 14 pounds during this week. That should be expected since your baby would weigh about 7 ounces.
Second Trimester – Week 20
During this week, you should expect to have an oval-shaped uterus which is almost level with your belly button. It will also grow by a centimeter every week. At this time, your baby’s weight would be close to 1 pound.
Second Trimester – Week 21
Having a baby measuring about 7 inches (from head to bottom) means that your uterus would be about 1/2 inch above your belly button.
Second Trimester – Week 22
You might start experiencing cravings for sugary and citrus foods during the 22nd week. Alternatively, you might develop an aversion against your favorite foods.
Second Trimester – Week 23
Your shape would now be visibly rounded. The growing baby bump will also cause your belly button to stick out.
Second Trimester – Week 24
You should expect to see some faint stretch marks on your abdomen, breasts and hips. By this time, your uterus would be 2 inches above the belly button.
Second Trimester – Week 25
Hopefully, you should have nothing against soccer, since your baby bump would be about the size of a soccer ball. Your nights would also be filled with vivid and lengthy dreams.
Second Trimester – Week 26
As your uterus grows bigger, you will experience heaviness around the pelvic area. Your back might also hurt, combined with cramping up of your legs.
Second Trimester – Week 27
Your uterus may experience tightening and clenching for 2-minute periods. However, this should not be mistaken for labor.
Second Trimester – Week 28
Having a uterus 3 inches above your belly button, means that your total weight gain would be between 17 to 24 pounds. The large uterus may slow down flow of urine by pressing against the tubes between your kidneys and bladder. At this time, you should also be ready to seek early treatment for possible urinary tract infections, incase you feel a burning sensation or pain while urinating.
