Breastfeeding can either be a joy or a chore depending on what you know. The more information you gather about it, the better prepared you will be, especially if you are a plus-size mom. Indeed, it is much better to learn beforehand than through trial and error. Here are a few useful tips to start with:
In case you have flat nipples, your baby might find it hard latching on to the breast. Perhaps, flat nipples occur due to extra fat filling out the areola that normally sticks out. Even if this occurs, resist the temptation of using artificial nipples. It would be terribly hard getting your baby to start breastfeeding once such artificial nipples are used.
To get your nipple out, try using a breast pump for at least 2 minutes. This can get it into a good shape for your baby to latch onto. You can also try pinching part of the nipple just enough to get your baby interested. Also try tickling your baby’s face and lips with the nipple and placing into his/her mouth. As soon as your baby latches onto the nipple, you can ease off the pinch. Do not hold on too long so as to prevent clogged ducts.
The last thing you want to happen while breastfeeding is to end up in a bent over and crooked position for half an hour. This can turn you off of breastfeeding. However motivated you may be to have your baby breastfeeding, you should only bring the baby to your breast – not the other way round.
Before you start breastfeeding, get into a comfortable seating position. You can place several pillows to get the best position. After doing this, you can then bring your baby up to the breast. In case, you still end up in a bent posture, you need to start this process again until you get it right. The effort will be worth it, since you will spend quite a bit of time in one position.
Coping With Clogged Ducts
Whenever you sense a clogged duct, increase nursing particularly on the affected side. While your baby is suckling, you can massage the breast to ease clogging. Pumping it until empty can also help. Do this once within a 24 hour period. This would require a breast pump with adjustable nipple sizes.
Take caution when trying home remedies to clear clogged ducts. Some home remedies intended to ease clogging (includes cabbage leaves) can actually lead to drying up of your milk supply.
Choosing The Right Bra
When selecting a bra, the most important aspect to consider is the right fit and the type of clasp. The bra should be convenient enough for ease of access. A good choice of bra will allow opening of the cup using one hand, while you hold your baby with the other.
Although you need to select the correct bra measurement, make sure to try it on before purchasing. For the right band size, measure around your torso in the region below your arms and above your breasts. For the cup size, measure around your bustline along the fullest part, then subtract your band size from this measurement.
