As a plus sized mother to be, you have to be worried about your current weight and how it affects both you and your unborn child.
Most women think that since this extra weight is known to be harmful to anybody’s health, they should try and lose it now that they are pregnant and have another life to think about. This line of thought is well and good but it is misguided. As a pregnant plus sized mother, now is not the time to go around looking for weight loss tips.
Trying to lose weight through the conventional ways that involve dieting, taking pills or extreme exercising could be harmful to both you and your unborn baby. Chances are, you put on some of the weight before you got pregnant or for some of us, it came on during your pregnancy. Whatever the case, dieting and taking pills aren’t the answer here. There are different ways you can go about managing your weight when pregnant.
Lifestyle Change for the Plus Sized Pregnant Woman
You have no doubt heard a lot of people telling you to put the fork down. Cut down on your food intake and stay away from junk. The junk bit is true. Junk food is generally unhealthy, even for non-expectant people. But as far as the cutting down on your food intake goes, simply putting the fork down will not help here. In fact, it might be detrimental to your health.
The fact that you have an ‘extra mouth’ to feed means that you have to take on more food to keep up your energy. Therefore cutting down does limit this intake and thus sapping you of your energy. But eating the way you have may not be healthy either, because of the whole unhealthy weight issue. This is almost all health experts advocate that plus sized pregnant women, (and generally everyone) change their eating habits when trying to manage their weight instead of simply cutting down on the intake.
This means you have to eat healthier. More fruits, more white meat, more nuts and roughage. Your growing baby needs nutrients. The vitamins, the proteins and minerals all come in handy when trying to boost and develop a growing child’s health. That is why you are advised to be careful and to avoid most ‘weight loss diets during your pregnancy. Some diets leave you very low on the essential nutrients such as folic acid, iron and most of the important minerals.
Workout Routine for the Plus Sized Pregnant Woman
Incorporating a little exercise in your daily routine is also a great way to make sure that your blood flows more freely within your body and that you are staying healthy for both your sake and your fetus’. The thing about pregnancy is this, within your first trimester, you may lose weight despite having the extra baby weight. Pregnancy nausea has been known to greatly diminish expectant mothers appetites.
You should think of this time as a launching pad for the rest of your eating lifestyle. Pick up healthy habits, exercise moderately and drink plenty of fluids. With this change in eating habit, you will be supplying you and your baby with the necessary nutrients and minerals while at the same time burning off the extra calories through the mild exercise.
Of course it is true that being overweight can and does pose a great deal of health problems. High blood pressure, pre-eclampsia and many other complications could arise due to your weight problem. However, if you were plus sized before you got pregnant, diet restrictions now will only do you more harm than good.
